How to Get Rid of Roundworms in People

Roundworms are a type of parasite that often infect pets, but can also infect humans. They typically attack the intestines. There are different species of roundworm, including the hookworm, guinea worm, threadworm and pinworm. Improper sanitation and a lack of good personal hygiene often contribute to a roundworm infection. Other risk factors include eating meat that is undercooked and having contact (either direct or indirect) with animal feces. It is also possible for a pet to spread a roundworm infection to humans.

See your doctor as soon as you experience possible symptoms of a roundworm infestation. Roundworms can only be reliably treated with medication; do not attempt to get rid of them yourself. Possible symptoms of a roundworm infestation include abdominal pain and vomiting. You may also notice a visible worm in your stool or your vomit.

Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking. This will help you avoid a possible drug interaction with your roundworm medication. According to the Cleveland Clinic, your doctor will likely prescribe pyrantel pamoate, mebendazole or albendazole to get rid of your roundworm infection. Follow all the medication instructions carefully and finish taking the full course of medicine.

Take any other medications prescribed by your doctor. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, you may take additional medication to treat problems associated with a roundworm infection, such as antihistamines, antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications.

Support your body with proper nutrition. While this will not expel the worms from your body, it will boost your general health and help your body recover. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that people infected with roundworms eat spicy foods, such as those containing turmeric and chili peppers, as well as eating plenty of vegetables and fruits. Take a multivitamin every day to replace nutrients lost to the roundworms.

Consider taking herbs to support your health. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that while herbs are unproven to get rid of roundworm infections in humans, some herbs have killed parasites in preliminary studies. These include garlic, clove, wormwood, turmeric and black walnut.
