Signs & Symptoms of Atrial Septal Defect
An atrial septal defect, also referred to as ASD, is a condition in which the wall between the two upper heart chambers has a hole in it, according to the Mayo Clinic. Those who have this condition have it from birth. Smaller atrial septal defects may close up without medical intervention. But if the defect is larger and does not close up, signs and symptoms are often present.-
Heart Symptoms

Heart murmurs can occur with this condition. If a heart murmur is present, a whooshing sound will be heard when the patient is being examined with a stethoscope, according to the Mayo Clinic. Skipped heart beats or heart palpitations may also occur.
Lung and Breathing Symptoms

Shortness of breath can occur with an atrial septal defect. This symptom is often most noticeable when the patient is exercising, according to the Mayo Clinic. Patients may also experience frequent lung infections.
Energy Symptoms

The University of Virginia Health System states that patients, especially children, often tire more easily when they are playing or taking part in physical activities. They can also experience fatigue.
Other Symptoms

Patients' skin may take on a bluish color. Their abdomens, legs and feet can become swollen. There is also an increased risk of stroke, according to the Mayo Clinic.
