Definition of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Dysfunctional or abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is bleeding that occurs between periods, after sex, or after menopause. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, it is one of the most common reasons a woman visits her doctor.
  1. Causes

    • AUB is often caused by a hormonal imbalance. For example, if your ovaries do not release an egg, this affects your hormone levels and can cause bleeding.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of AUB include bleeding at times other than during a menstrual cycle or having heavier bleeding than normal during a menstrual cycle. A woman with AUB may also pass blood clots, have hot flashes, or have mood swings.

    Diagnosis

    • Doctors may perform a physical exam, take blood tests, take a biopsy, or take images with an ultrasound to diagnose the problem causing the bleeding.

    Treatment

    • Doctors may prescribe medications, hormones, or perform surgery to control or stop the bleeding.

    Considerations

    • You should see your doctor immediately if you are experiencing AUB; if left untreated, you could become anemic or develop problems with your uterine lining.
