Gallbladder Attack & Pain

The gallbladder is an organ that stores bile and helps with digestion. Sometimes the gallbladder can become inflamed, which is called acute cholecystitis. This is commonly referred to as a "gallbladder attack" and can be very painful.
  1. Symptoms

    • According to the National Institutes of Health, pain experienced during a gallbladder attack may be dull or sharp. Pain may feel like cramping, and it may spread to the back.

    Cause

    • Gallstones cause 90 percent of gallbladder attacks. Disease and tumors in the gallbladder can also cause the attacks.

    Treatment

    • A doctor may prescribe antibiotics, but since gallstones are the main cause of gallbladder attacks, surgery to remove the gallbadder is often recommended.

    Considerations

    • To reduce the risk of gallstones, maintain a healthy weight and avoid fatty foods.

    Warning

    • If a gallbladder attack is severe, seek prompt medical attention. According to the Mayo Clinic, a high fever or an inability to sit because of the pain are indicators that immediate medical attention is needed.
