The Best Way to Stop a Severe Bloody Nose
When you have a bloody nose that shows no sign of abating, there's nothing you can do but stop and take care of it. Remain calm, and take precautionary steps to make sure the bleeding doesn't get worse. In two to three minutes, you can have your bloody nose in control.-
Addressing the Problem
-
Once you discover that your nose is bleeding, find paper towels, tissues or napkins to keep it from making a mess. If your nose is bleeding profusely, you can stick paper towels up the leaking nostrils. Make sure the towels are a comfortable fit and not restricting to your breathing. Find somewhere to lie or sit down with your head elevated to slow the bleeding.
Pinching the Nose
-
Use your index finger and your thumb to pinch your nose. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to the area for two to three minutes until the bleeding slows and stops. Pinching the nose while your head is elevated (above your heart, lying down) will help you stop the bleeding quickly. Wash your hands and face thoroughly after the bleeding has ceased.
Preventing a Bloody Nose
-
Bloody noses are typically unexpected, but there are things you can do to prevent a severe problem. If you have bloody noses at home, the air there may be dry. Invest in a humidifier. Stress or trauma can also cause a bloody nose. If you get a bloody nose when you are anxious, develop strategies to lower your stress level quickly and effectively. If you have bloody noses that you consider too frequent, talk to your doctor.
