Toe Nail Fungus Cures

If you have white spots or a yellow discoloration on your toenail, you may have a fungal infection. Left untreated, it can lead to brittle, painful edges on the toenail. This condition usually results from moist environments that foster the growth of fungus, including showers, spas and swimming pools. Fortunately, there are various cures for common fungus infections.
  1. Topical Treatments

    • There are several over-the-counter antifungal treatments available. Use the cream or ointment as directed until the symptoms subside. However, many OTC medications do not work very well. Your doctor may instead prescribe an antifungal cream called ciclopirox (also marketed as Batrafen, Loprox, Penlac and Stieprox) that is applied to the infected toenail twice a day.

    Oral Medications

    • If topical treatments don't cure the infection, your doctor may prescribe an oral medication such as itraconazole (Sporanox), fluconazole (Diflucan) or terbinafine (Lamisil). These prescriptions are generally used for six to 12 weeks. In serious cases, however, it can take up to four months to eradicate the fungus.

While these medications are effective, there is also the chance of side effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience a skin rash. Also, people with liver disease or congestive heart failure should avoid use of these medications.

    Home Cures

    • Keep your feet cool and dry; this greatly reduces the ability of the fungus to spread. One reason why the fungus multiplies is due to an imbalance in the foot's pH levels. One home remedy is to soak your feet in a vinegar rinse for 15 to 20 minutes daily. Mix one part vinegar with two parts water.

Other home remedies that have not been proved effective, but remain popular, include Vicks VapoRub, Listerine, iodine and lemongrass oil, all applied topically to the affected area.
