Underarm Infections

Several different kinds of underarm infections or armpit infections can develop. These infections may go away without treatment, but unexplained underarm infections should be evaluated by a doctor.
  1. Skin Infections

    • According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, cysts and other underarm infections can develop on the skin’s surface due to antiperspirant use or shaving.

    Abscesses

    • Abscesses, or painful large lumps, can grow under the skin of a person’s armpit due to an infection.

    Viral Infection

    • A viral infection can cause the lymph nodes to swell under a patient’s arms as the body tries to fight off an infection.

    Breast Cancer

    • Lumps under the armpit can be a sign of breast cancer, especially in women.

    Treatment

    • Most underarm infections do not require treatment, unless breast cancer is involved. Patients should see a doctor if they have underarm abnormalities that cause pain or tenderness.
