Also known as unexplained dermopathy, Morgellons disease is a rare disorder that primarily affects the skin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cause of the disease remains unknown as of 2010.-

Commonly reported symptoms of Morgellons disease include biting, crawling and stinging sensations on the skin; fibers, granules, specks or threads beneath or on the skin; rashes; and sores. Secondary symptoms often include confusion, fatigue, joint pain, poor concentration, temporary memory loss and vision changes.

Oklahoma State University reports that a doctor named Sir Thomas Browne described apparent cases of Morgellons disease among children in 1674. "New Scientist" states treatment wasn't needed because symptoms disappeared independently.
