Infrared Light for Carpal Tunnel

Carpel tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerves and tendons around the carpal tunnel become inflamed, causing pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in fingers and wrists. Usually, patients turn to non-surgical measures first, among them--infrared light therapy for relief.
  1. Infrared light

    • Infrared light lies in the invisible spectrum of light, below red. It can penetrate to a depth of 30 to 40 millimeters and is ideal in the treatment of joints and deep muscles, according to Johns Dental Laboratories.

    Effects

    • According to Dr. Nelson Clinic, infrared light causes the hemoglobin in the blood to release nitric oxide, which in turn acts on the nerves to decrease or eliminate pain, including pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.

    Cold Laser Therapy

    • Cold laser therapy utilizes infrared light to promote soft tissue healing and to treat pain linked to carpal tunnel. The Summit Spine and Disc Center says, that cold laser therapy has a 75.6 percent success rate of treating carpal tunnel.

    Infrared Healing Gloves

    • There are also therapy gloves and wrist bands that use infrared energy to reduce soreness, stiffness and the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome.

    Caution

    • Since therapy gloves and wristbands provide an alternative form of treatment, you should always check with your doctor before using one.
