Miconazole Nitrate Vs. Econazole Nitrate

Miconazole nitrate and econazole nitrate are two different medications designed to fight fungal infections. Miconazole nitrate can address infections in the vagina and on the skin, while econazole nitrate can only address skin infections.

  1. Miconazole Nitrate

    • Miconazole nitrate (Monistat) comes in many forms, including vaginal suppositories, vaginal creams and skin creams, according to Drugs.com. The vaginal products address yeast infections, while the skin product (Monistat Derm) addresses various forms of ringworm (tinea) and dermal yeast infections.

    Econazole Nitrate

    • Econazole nitrate (Spectazole cream) addresses various forms of ringworm, including athlete’s foot and jock itch, reports Drugs.com. It also addresses yeast infections of the skin.

    Miconazole Nitrate Warnings

    • Vaginal miconazole products may weaken the latex in condoms or vaginal diaphragms, according to Drugs.com. This weakening may diminish the effectiveness of these products as prevention for sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancies.

    Econazole Nitrate Warnings

    • Econazole nitrate should not be used internally. It should also not be used on or near the eyes.

    Side Effects

    • Both mizonazole nitrate and exonazole nitrate may cause burning and irriration. Miconazole nitrate alone may trigger vaginal or vulval itching, cramps, headaches or hives.
