Scotch Tape Test for Pinworms
Pinworms are a parasite that commonly infect young children. If you notice your child scratching at his bottom or fidgeting often, consider testing for pinworms. You may also notice very small white worms in his stool. You can perform a simple scotch tape test at home to check for pinworms.-
Time Frame
-
Perform this test in the morning before bathing or using the bathroom. Pinworms lay their eggs at night.
Equipment
-
This test is very simple; all you'll need is a piece of clear scotch tape and a clean glass slide. Do not use double-sided tape. You can ask your doctor to provide a glass slide.
Test
-
Press the tape (sticky side down) on the anal area. Hold it for a few seconds, then press it onto the glass slide (sticky side down). Bring the glass slide to your doctor for analysis.
Repetition
-
According to Medline Plus, you may need to perform this test up to three times on separate mornings.
Treatment
-
Your doctor can prescribe a medication to treat a pinworm infection. Everybody in the household should be treated at the same time to minimize the risk of spreading the parasites.
Considerations
-
While undergoing treatment for a pinworm infection, FamilyDoctor.org recommends carefully scrubbing and disinfecting all surfaces in the house. Wash all clothing, bedding and towels in hot water and have everybody in the house carefully clean under their nails, trimming them short afterward.
