Lumbosacral Neuropathy Symptoms
Neuropathy (nerve damage) in the lumbosacral region (lower back) often causes pain not only in the back but legs as well. Neuropathy in this area can cause a number of symptoms ranging from mild to severe.-
Causes of Symptoms
-
Several conditions can affect the spine and back ranging from osteoarthritis to a herniated disk. These problems can exert pressure on surrounding nerves, resulting in a variety of symptoms.
Pain
-
Pain is one of the most common symptoms of neuropathy. It can range from dull and throbbing to sharp and shooting. It can affect just the back or move down the legs as well, according to the Mayo Clinic. Pain from nerve damage often worsens when sitting, sneezing, coughing or doing any other activity that puts pressure on the lower back.
Odd Sensations
-
Nerve damage in the back can manifest as numbness, tingling, prickling, alternating hot and cold sensations and muscle spasms. These symptoms might also move down the leg.
Bowel and Bladder Function
-
Inability to control your bowel and bladder indicate serious nerve damage, and you should seek medical attention right away.
Treatment
-
If you experience symptoms of nerve damage in your lower back, see your doctor. In most cases, conservative treatments like rest, medication and physical therapy can bring relief. An exception would be loss of bowel and bladder function, which requires more aggressive measures.
