What Are the Treatments for Foot Surgery Scar Tissue?
Scar tissue can form after an injury or surgery. A scar revision surgery may be performed to reduce the amount of scar tissue and improve the appearance of the scar.-
Identification
-
Foot surgery may cause scar tissue to form. The amount of scar tissue that forms after surgery, depends largely upon the depth of the scar, the location of the scar and a patient's age.
Medication
-
Medications such as topical steroid creams and antihistimine creams may help to reduce the itching and soreness associated with scars. Lotions that contain benzoyl peroxide, may also help to reduce and soften scar tissue.
Scar Revision Surgery
-
It may be necessary to have scar revision surgery to reduce the scar tissue in the foot and to improve the appearance of the scar. This may be done under a local anesthetic, IV sedation or a general anesthetic. This type of surgery may be done as soon as 60 to 90 days after foot surgery.
Laser Scar Surgery
-
Laser scar revision surgery is a non-invasive technique that may help to reduce the amount of scar tissue after surgery. This method uses a beam of light to improve the appearance and reduce the amount of scar tissue from atrophic scars. Atrophic scars often occur as a result of surgery or trauma.
Considerations
-
There are risks involved with any type of surgery. These risks may include difficulty with anesthesia, bleeding, infection or a failed surgery. Consult with your doctor about the risks and benefits of surgery to reduce scar tissue. No scar revision treatment is guaranteed to work, however, many of these treatments can improve scar tissue formation.
