Face Reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is an effective treatment for moderate cases of acne, according to the National Institute of Health. This medication may cause some side effects when used on the face that should go away within a few days.
  1. Effects

    • Benzoyl peroxide comes in several different forms, from wipes to gels and bars. Most of them may cause facial skin irritation, a warm sensation on the face and/or peeling, according to Drugs.com.

    Important Fact

    • According to Drugs.com, 4 percent of those who use a benzoyl peroxide solution will get a very bad case of dry skin and some may develop extremely sensitive skin (dermatitis).

    Warning

    • Anyone who notices their face turning red, develops a rash, feels a burning sensation or swelling should contact a doctor immediately. Minor irritation should eventually subside.

    Prevention/Solution

    • A few producers of benzoyl peroxide mitigate the irritating effects of BP by creating gels that slowly release the medication over a few hours.

    Tip

    • People who forget to apply a treatment of BP to their face should not make up for in the next treatment by doubling the amount they put on their skin.
