Dangers of Procrit
-
Cardiac Risks
-
Studies and clinical trials have shown that Procrit increases the risk of suffering serious and even potentially fatal cardiac side effects such as heart attack and heart failure. Stroke and blood clots are also more likely in people taking the drug. The best way to prevent these life-threatening conditions is to take the lowest dose possible to treat your condition, and to use the medication exactly as prescribed.
Cancer Risks
-
Cancer patients who take Procrit to treat anemia are also more likely to experience tumor growth than those not taking the drug. Studies have also shown that Procrit can shorten survival in people with certain types of cancer, including cervical, breast, neck, head, lymphoid, and non-small cell lung cancer.
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
-
Because Procrit contains albumin, there is an extremely rare possibility of developing a serious neurological condition called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Although no human cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob have ever been linked to Procrit, it remains a possibility because it contains albumin.
Dizziness
-
Procrit can cause dizziness, so it's best to use caution when driving or performing other tasks requiring concentration until you know how it will affect you.
Other Side Effects
-
Other side effects sometimes experienced by patients taking Procrit include constipation; nausea; vomiting; stomach pain; indigestion; diarrhea; cough; headaches; congestion; joint and muscle aches; difficulty sleeping; and pain or stinging at the injection site. None of these is cause for concern, but they should be reported to your doctor if they become bothersome.
