How to Treat Gingivitis with Natural Remedies

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by an accumulation of plaque, bacteria and food particles in the mouth. Most adults have some stage of gingivitis. In its most severe form, gingivitis causes painful, swollen gums, making it difficult to eat. Loss of underlying bone can also occur. Medical treatments include scraping below the gum line, oral surgery and antibiotics for the worst cases, but you can prevent or even reverse gingivitis with several natural methods.
  1. Daily Oral Hygiene

    • Brushing and flossing your teeth is the first line of defense in natural treatment for gingivitis. Herbal toothpastes with mint, babool, neem, holy basil, charcoal, baking soda, anise and myrrh are good alternatives to traditional mass brand toothpastes. These ingredients prevent the infection from spreading and reduce inflammation. Mouthwashes containing sage or peppermint oil, menthol and chamomile tincture are also effective. Massage gums daily with a rubber-tipped stimulator to increase the flow of blood to the gums, which, in turn, promotes healing.

    Supplements

    • Studies have shown that some individuals with gingivitis are deficient in Coenzyme Q10, which is a vital nutrient needed by every cell in the body. Taking supplements made from natural means is a way to halt deterioration of gums and allow healing to occur. Other vitamins and supplements effective in improving the health of gum tissue are calcium, folic acid, which reduces inflammatory response, and Vitamin C, which helps build healthy tissue.

    Nutrition

    • Eating the proper foods can also go a long way toward healthier gums. A compound in cranberries has anti-adhesion properties which help prevent plaque from adhering to teeth. Foods low in saturated fats and those rich in fiber promote healthy gums. Include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Spicy and oily dishes can worsen gingivitis. You should also avoid sugar, white flour, soft drinks and syrups, while restricting chocolates and pastries. The sugar in these items is known to aggravate the condition.

    Rubs and Rinses

    • Applying a topical rub or using a natural rinse in your mouth can accelerate healing. Substances such as clove oil, aloe vera pulp, baking soda and water may be rubbed along the gum line for soothing relief. A combination of two teaspoons of white oak bar, one teaspoon of myrrh, 3/4 teaspoon of peppermint and 1/8 teaspoon of clove powder mixed together may be applied to gums twice daily. Green tea extract inhibits streptococcus bacteria. Gargle twice daily with water and a pinch of salt or a teaspoon of triphala powder. Equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide and water produces another gargle that’s effective against gingivitis. A strong tea made of sage and sea salt has antiseptic properties that reduce inflammation and promote healing.
