How to Beat Rebound Congestion

Nasal congestion afflicts millions of Americans each year and is very difficult to combat. While no permanent cure exists to relieve nasal congestion, one can instead take medicines and steps to reduce symptoms and mitigate the effects of nasal congestion. Rebound congestion is defined as the abnormal swelling and enlargement of the nasal mucous glands and passages. This severe form of congestion blocks nasal passages, restricting airflow and causing extreme discomfort to its victims.

Instructions

    • 1

Use medical decongestants to dry up the sinuses and prevent postnasal drip, which causes a sore throat. Be careful not to overuse nasal sprays, which could worsen rebound congestions. Over time these rebound congestions will only respond to that specific nasal spray, causing dependency.

Blow your nose carefully when needed. Do not block one nostril while blowing, and do not blow hard or forcefully.

    • 3

Keep the air in your home humid by using a cool mist humidifier rather than a hot air humidifier. A cool mist humidifier will keep your nose and nasal passages from drying out.

    • 4

Drink warm liquids frequently such as hot tea, or eat hot soup. This will keep your nasal passages from drying up and allow the cilia in your nose to work faster, which will eradicate mucus easier.
