Lamisil & Nail Fungus

Nail fungus can develop when the feet come into contact with one of many types of fungi, and it can be difficult to treat. Thankfully, there are several medications and at-home methods that can help treat the condition, one of which is the drug Lamisil.
  1. Symptoms

    • A fungal infection of the nail is often characterized by thick yet brittle nails that often crumble apart. They can be yellow or white in color and misshapen. In extreme cases, they can separate entirely from the nail bed.

    Lamisil

    • Lamisil is the brand name of a drug known as terbinafine, a common anti-fungal medication. Depending on its form, it can be used for a variety of other conditions, including tinea versicolor and athlete's foot.

    Function

    • According to Mayo Clinic, Lamisil works by allowing the nail to literally "grow out" the infection. This means that as the nail grows, the new nail is healthy.

    Duration

    • Lamisil does not provide instant relief, warns Health Square. It often takes several months for the fungal infection to be completely resolved.

    Side Effects

    • Lamisil can produce side effects, some of which can be serious. According to Mayo Clinic, one possible serious side effect is liver damage. Other possible side effects of Lamisil tablets are vision problems and a skin rash.
