Dermatological Treatment for Enlarged Pores on the Nose

Dermatologists have several medical treatments available for enlarged pores. Noses, chins and foreheads are the usual spots requiring work.
  1. Causes

    • Numerous oil glands are located beneath the "T-zone." Excessive oil production causes blockages when the sebum (oil) hardens. The pore closes around the blockage, gripping the sebum, dead skin and whatever else has lodged within it. When this happens, the pore opening stretches and appears visibly larger.

    Treatments

    • Medical treatments for large pores include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, collagen-inducing laser treatments and oil-reducing prescription drugs.

    Microdermabrasion

    • Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin surface. It removes blackheads and stimulates collagen growth for smoother skin. Basically, microdermabrasion is the removal of dead surface skin. Regular treatments are required.

    Peels

    • Chemical peels use glycolic acid in varying strengths to peel off the top layer of skin. This exposes the fresh new skin beneath. Peels reveal a more refined surface.

    Laser Treatments

    • Laser treatments for enlarged pores work because new collagen is produced. This new collagen supports the oil glands, constricting the large pore opening by pressing the pore entrance. Known as combined therapy, it is a two-part process that builds collagen.

    Topcial Drugs

    • There are also topically applied drugs that shrink the pore openings. They work by reducing oil production, excavating the pores of excess oil. Whichever method you choose, remember that multiple treatments will be necessary and constant vigilance is required to maintain refined skin.
