Uterine Fibroids & Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Uterine fibroids are benign growths that develop in the uterus during a woman’s childbearing years. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder of the colon that causes abdominal discomfort.-
Uterine Fibroids Symptoms
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, women with uterine fibroids may experience prolonged menstrual periods, heavy menstrual bleeding or constipation. Frequent urination and pain in the pelvis, back or legs can occur with uterine fibroids.
Uterine Fibroids Causes
-
Uterine fibroids may develop as a result of genetic alterations in the cells of uterine muscles. The cells of uterine fibroids have higher levels of estrogen than normal uterine muscle cells.
Uterine Fibroids Treatment
-
Medications that regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle such as Lupron and progestin releasing intrauterine devices may relieve heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure and they may shrink fibroids. Severe symptoms may require a myomectomy (the surgical removal of fibroids) or a hysterectomy (the surgical removal of the uterus).
