Pes Planus Diseases
Pes planus disease, commonly referred to as flat feet, is a condition in which there is no arch in the middle of the foot. Pes planus is typically painless, but it can cause problems with the ankles turning inward as well as knee problems and other related foot problems.-
Symptoms
-
Symptoms related to pes planus may include lower leg pain, ankle pain, foot pain and swelling of the ankles.
Causes
-
Over the course of time, and with normal wear and tear, the arches can break down, causing pes planus to occur.
Complications
-
Pes planus has been known to cause additional foot problems such as hammertoes, bunions, arthritis of the feet, knee splints, Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis.
Diagnosis
-
Diagnosis usually consists of a physical examination by your physician and an MRI scan of your foot structure.
Treatment
-
Pes planus generally requires no treatment. However, wearing arch supports in your shoes may lessen the stress on your knees and ankles.
