Topamax Acidosis Symptoms

Topamax is a medication prescribed to help both with epilepsy and migraines. It does have risks, such as the risk of acidosis. You should be aware of the symptoms of acidosis when taking this medication so you know what to watch for. The symptoms vary by the individual. If you notice any of these symptoms or any other side effects of the medication, you should contact your medical provider immediately.
  1. Loss of Appetite

    • If you find that you have no appetite, this could be due to acidosis. Although this could be caused by many other things as well, it is important to watch for this in conjunction with other symptoms.

    Irregular Heartbeat

    • You may notice that your heart is beating faster or slower than normal. Also, you may notice your heart is not beating rhythmically at all times. It may skip a beat or race then slow quickly. It is not uncommon to feel the heart beating hard in your chest.

    Hyperventilation

    • Hyperventilation is the act of breathing much deeper than necessary that results in being lightheaded and sometimes panic attacks. When you hyperventilate, you will find that you cannot stop breathing deeply. This occurs because the body is trying to get rid of the excess carbon dioxide in the body.

    Trouble with Alertness

    • If you find you are having trouble staying focused or conscious you may be suffering from acidosis. Alertness has to do with your ability to stay awake as well as your ability to concentrate on a given task. You may also experience confusion.

    Tiredness

    • Because of the change in acidity in the blood, if you have acidosis you will likely find you are abnormally exhausted, even when there is no reason to be.
