Signs & Symptoms of Acute Prostatitis
Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland in men. There are both chronic and acute forms of prostatitis, but the acute form is almost always caused by a bacterial infection, according to the National Institutes of Health. This can lead to pain and other problems in the pelvic area, as well as other general signs and symptoms of infection.-
Pain
-
Prostatitis can cause pain in several areas of the upper and lower midsection. These include abdominal pain, usually on the right side of the abdomen, lower back pain and perineal pain. The disease can also cause pain in the testicles, pain while ejaculating and pain during urination and bowel movements.
Urinary Symptoms
-
In addition to pain while urinating, acute prostatitis can cause other urinary-related symptoms. You may experience difficulty urinating, a decreased urinary stream, increased urinary urgency and urinary retention. Because acute prostatitis is likely caused by an infection, you may experience a burning sensation while urinating, foul-smelling urine and blood in your urine and semen.
Infection Symptoms
-
Since acute prostatitis is most likely caused by an infection, you may experience other symptoms related to having an infection. These include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes (especially in the groin area), nausea, vomiting and a general feeling of illness.
