Familial Tremor Syndrome

An essential tremor is a condition that causes trembling in one part of the body, most often the hands. When the essential tremor is caused due to a genetic mutation, it is referred to as Familial Tremor Syndrome.
  1. Symptoms

    • The primary symptom of this condition is trembling. The trembling begins gradually, and eventually worsens with time. According to Mayo Clinic, the trembling is usually only noticeable with movement.

    Causes

    • This condition is caused by a genetic mutation. This mutation can be passed down by either parent to the child.

    Complications

    • This condition can cause those who suffer from it difficulty in daily activities. The trembling can cause lifestyle complications such as difficulty shaving, eating, talking and writing.

    Misconceptions

    • Familial Tremor Syndrome is not the same as Parkinson's Disease. Familial tremor usually only occurs with movement, whereas the trembling is constant with Parkinson's.

    Treatment

    • This condition can be treated with a multitude of medications including beta blockers, anti-seizure medications, tranquilizers and botox injections. Each of these medications help stop the trembling. Therapy and surgery may also help by lessening the severity of the condition.
