Information on Weak Adrenal Glands

Adrenal weakness is a condition that can be caused by stress, physical trauma, toxic overload, excessive exercise, emotional strain, prescription drugs, lack of rest and chemical toxins. This often results in a disturbance of the endocrine system and hormonal imbalances within the body.
  1. Function

    • The adrenal glands produce essential hormones such as adrenalin, cortisol, cortisone, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. Many hormones produced by the adrenals are vital to your stress responses.

    Geography

    • The adrenal glands are three to four inches in length and located above the kidneys in your lower back beneath the ribcage.

    Identification

    • Signs and symptoms of adrenal weakness are fatigue, low blood sugar, susceptibility to infections or allergies, depression, low blood pressure, nervousness, trouble concentrating, irritability and insomnia.

    Treatment

    • A variety of methods may be used to strengthen the adrenals such as diet, vitamin and mineral supplementation, relaxation techniques, moderate exercise and herbs. In addition, your doctor may recommend a hormone replacement therapy involving cortisone, progesterone or DHEA.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Eat small meals throughout the day high in complex carbohydrates and lean proteins, vegetables and foods rich in potassium. Get plenty of rest and avoid adrenal stimulants such as caffeine, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, sugar and foods with high levels of sodium.

    Potential

    • Supplements to help support the adrenals may be added such as Vitamins C, B-6, zinc, magnesium and Pantothenic acid.
