Thioglycolate for Permanent Hair Removal

Many products are available to remove unwanted hair. Some are sold over the counter and contain a chemical called thioglycolate. Thioglycolate and compounds made with it do not destroy the hair at the root, which makes them unsuitable for permanent hair removal. Only methods such as laser surgery, which prevent the root from producing additional hair, are effective in permanent hair removal.
  1. Thioglycolate

    • Thioglycolate, or calcium thioglycolate, is known as a depilatory and is often used to remove unwanted hair in the underarm, bikini area, or on the hands or feet. Typically this chemical is found in creams and lotions offered for sale over the counter.

    How It Works

    • Thioglycolate works by removing the bond that a stalk of hair shares with its follicle. This bond is formed by an element in each strand of hair called keratin. When the bond is broken, the hair become disconnected from the follicle and can brush right off. Using these creams can be a good option for people prone to razor burn or ingrown hairs, as the thioglycolate causes the hair to fall off of its own accord. In addition, the creams are much less painful then waxing or plucking since the breaking of the bond is a chemical reaction, and no hair is being pulled out at the root. Unfortunately, the hair follicle is unaffected by the thioglycolate, andthe hair will regrow after a few days.

    Products

    • Nair, Veet and other lotions and creams containing this chemical for hair removal can be purchased over the counter. New users should be wary, as they may be susceptible to allergic skin reactions. Try the cream on a small area of skin first to determine whether you have an allergic reaction or whether your skin is able to tolerate the chemicals.

    Permanent Solutions

    • For permanent hair removal, you need to tackle the problem at the root. Since hair regrows relatively quickly when saved, or even waxed or plucked, the only solution is to use a process or procedure that will stop the follicle from producing a new hair. Laser and electrolysis are the most common methods of achieving permanent hair removal. The need to go to a cosmetologist or dermatologist for these types of hair removal makes them a less attractive option for many.A home hair removal laser system called Tria Laser is available.
