What Are the Causes of Pediatric Hypertension?

Pediatric hypertension is a serious medical condition that can cause many adverse complications. This condition is commonly known as high blood pressure.

    • Pediatric hypertension is categorized by the cause of the condition. The two types are known as essential hypertension and secondary hypertension.

    Causes

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the most common diseases that cause secondary hypertension in adolesents are coarctation of the aorta and renal disease. Essential hypertension may be caused by obesity or diabetes.

    • The University of Maryland Medical Center states that 750,000 children nationwide have hypertension.

    Complications

    • If hypertension persists from childhood into adulthood, the risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, artherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and kidney disease dramatically increase.

    Treatment

    • Children with hypertension are monitored closely and treated with medications that will help lower blood pressure. In some cases, by curing the disease or the condition, the hypertension will also be cured.
