Medtronic Carelink Monitor Instructions

Medtronic CareLink Monitor is a device that is used to transfer data from a person's implantable cardiac device, such as a defibrillator, to a remote location so a doctor may monitor it. This data transfer is done via a standard telephone line and is received in the clinic or hospital over the Internet. The major advantage this system offers is that it enables the doctor to correctly assess the patient's condition at any point of time.

  1. Wearing the Monitor

    • The data that need to be transmitted to the doctor from the defibrillator is carried by means of a hand-held portable device that is connected to the defibrillator and placed on your chest. You must wear the Medtronic monitor at all times, as directed by your doctor. Wear loose clothing that doesn't get in the way of your monitor and ensure the monitor stays dry. The monitor should be checked periodically to ensure it is still on, functioning properly and collecting data.

    Usage Instructions

    • Each patient will be given a time or times when they must call in to allow the Medtronic to report results. At the appointed time, the monitor must be linked to a standard telephone line within the United States, through the socket on the monitor. Once the monitor is linked, press the "Start" button on the monitor. The antenna that comes with the set should be opened at this time, so that it protrudes from the monitor. This starts the process of transferring data from the monitor. The process may last anywhere between three and 12 minutes.

    Using the System

    • The clinic receives this data from a remote location by dialing a predetermined toll free number. Remove the antenna from over the monitor the moment the dialing starts. The transmission of data normally takes only three minutes, but depending on the data load, can last up to as long as one hour. During the call, you are usually on the telephone with the clinic and the doctor, who will read the data and communicate to you. If need be, your cardiologist may schedule an immediate appointment for any abnormalities in symptoms or may ask you to transmit the data again. The Medtronic CareLink Monitor is meant to enable "live" and remote connection with the patient. The same process can also be carried out when you are traveling.
