Is Pink Eye Contagious Before Symptoms Are Present?

Conjunctivitis commonly referred to as pinkeye, can be caused by either a virus or bacterial infection. Viral conjunctivitis is contagious before the symptoms are noticeable. Bacterial conjunctivitis is contagious after symptoms appear. Both remain contagious as long as the pinkeye is present.

    • Typically, common symptoms of pinkeye consist of itching, redness, a gritty feeling and a discharge in one or both eyes.

    • Diagnosis of pinkeye is generally done by a visual examination. In some cases, a sample of the discharge may be sent to a laboratory for testing.

    • Treatment of bacterial pinkeye usually consist of a prescription antibiotic in the form of eye drops. Viral pinkeye typically runs its course without needed treatment.

    • Natural treatment of pinkeye may help ease the discomfort associated with the infection. Simply applying a warm, wet towel to the infected eye several times a day may help ease the discomfort.

    Prevention

    • Pinkeye is highly contagious, if you know someone that has pinkeye, wash your hands regularly and abstain from touching your eyes.
