How to Treat Erectile Problems

Every man will experience some type of erectile problem at some point in his life. Intermittent problems are fairly normal, but persistent problems are a cause for concern. According to the Mayo Clinic, an inability to achieve or maintain an erection at least 25 percent of the time qualifies as erectile dysfunction (ED). ED can affect any man but is more common in older men. It has several different causes and a variety of options for treatment.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult your physician. Changes in erectile function could be a sign of a more serious problem, including heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. Consulting a doctor can help you rule out an underlying disease or get the appropriate treatment.

    • 2

Adjust your medications. Some medications can cause erectile dysfunction. Common culprits include medications for hypertension and depression. Work with your doctor to find an appropriate substitute.

    • 3

Reduce alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol use can damage the heart and impair blood flow to the penis. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommends no more than two drinks per day for men.

    • 4

Quit smoking. Cigarettes constrict the blood vessels and inhibit blood flow to the penis. Smoking also contributes to hypertension and heart disease, both contributing factors in erectile dysfunction.

    • 5

Exercise. This improves blood flow, strengthens the heart and helps reverse hypertension, all of which improve erectile function and sexual response. Exercise also helps you maintain a healthy weight; obese men are more likely to experience ED than their thinner counterparts.

    • 6

Seek counseling. Depression, stress and even anxiety about having an erection can cause erectile dysfunction. If you have ruled out a physical cause, consider talking to a mental health professional.

    • 7

Consider drug therapy. ED drugs have a proven track record. However, these drugs are not safe for everyone, and men with heart disease should be especially careful.
