Complications of Chronic Bile Reflux
Chronic bile reflux occurs from bile that flows from the small intestine into the stomach and the esophagus over a long period of time. This condition causes burning and pain in the upper area of the abdomen.-
GERD
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, can accompany bile reflux and cause inflammation and irritation of the esophagus.
Esophageal Narrowing
-
Bile reflux may cause scar tissue to develop in the lower esophagus that narrows the esophagus, increases the risk of choking and interferes with normal swallowing.
Barrett's Esophagus
-
The tissue of the lower esophagus can change its composition and color from long-term exposure to bile.
Esophageal Cancer
-
Cells of the esophagus may have a greater risk of becoming cancerous after extended exposure to bile and stomach acid.
Gastritis
-
Gastritis is a stomach irritation that can result from exposure to bile. Patients with gastritis may develop stomach ulcers, bleeding and stomach cancer.
