Natural Remedies for Infant Yeast Infection

Yeast infections are quite common in infants, who can pick up the infection from their mothers during the birthing process. The condition typically starts in and around the mouth, which is referred to as thrush, but it can spread through the gastrointestinal tract and eventually cause a diaper rash. Babies can also get a yeast-based diaper rash from being in a moist, wet diaper for too long. Common symptoms of thrush include small, white patches in the mouth and on the tongue. A diaper rash with red or pus-filled lesions may be caused by a yeast infection.
  1. Hygiene

    • One of the simplest and best ways to treat a yeast infection in the diaper area is to practice good hygiene and change the baby's diaper frequently. At least once a day be sure to wash the baby's bottom and genitals with a mild cleanser. Thoroughly rinse the area and pat dry with a clean, dry towel to help prevent the infection from spreading. Also, be sure to change the baby's diaper very frequently, at least every few hours. Sitting in a wet diaper can cause a yeast infection and it can also make it spread.

    Yogurt

    • Yogurt can be a very good treatment for a yeast infection, and it can be used in two ways. First, eating yogurt can be beneficial. However, keep in mind that yogurt and other milk-based products should not be given to children until they are older than 1. You can also treat a yeast infection by applying yogurt directly to the part of the body where the infection has developed. In babies, this can be done if an infection has spread to the skin around the mouth or around where the diaper is worn. It is not advisable to place yogurt on infected skin while wearing a diaper, however.

    Other Treatments

    • Yeast infections can be difficult to clear up in infants, so if you have tried non-medical treatments without success you may want to consult with your pediatrician and consider drug treatment. Most often, commonly used anti-fungal antibiotic are recommended for treatment of infant yeast infections. These medicines are available in both topical and oral forms. The most common medicine is called Nystatin. Be sure to fully follow your doctor's directions for the best results in clearing up the infection. Even with medicinal treatment, a yeast infection can be stubborn and it may take several weeks to clear up.
