How to Build Up Your Immune System When You Have Cancer

If you're suffering from cancer, your immune system may be in a perpetually weakened state. The disease itself, coupled with chemotherapy or other aggressive forms of treatment, can take a serious toll on your body's ability to fight off infection. This is why many cancer patients also suffer from the common cold or bacterial infections. Fortunately, you can take several steps to build up your immune system.

Instructions

    • 1

Eat a special diet. Certain foods have been shown to impede recovery in cancer patients, such as meats and other high-fat products. Too much protein can also impair the immune system's ability to fight cancerous cells. Follow a vegetarian diet to strengthen your immune system and stave off infections. Since fats are a necessary part of your diet, opt for monounsaturated fats such as those found in canola or vegetable oil. Some foods are particularly effective at boosting the immune system in cancer patients, such as mushrooms, tea, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Exercise regularly. Frequent physical activity increases the amount of illness-fighting white blood cells in the bloodstream. Exercise is also crucial for preventing obesity, diabetes, and a myriad of other conditions that can complicate your prognosis and weaken your immune system.

    • 3

Relax. Patients with high stress levels tend to have weaker immune systems; the adrenaline caused by stress decreases the effectiveness of the body's immune response. Perform daily meditation and breathing exercises to keep your stress in check.
