Avoid alcohol. Alcohol consumption is a leading cause of liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Since liquor is a toxic substance, you place a burden on your liver every time you drink. If you drink, do so in moderation. The Mayo Clinic recommends limiting alcohol consumption to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men.

Take medications only as prescribed. Overdosing on medications can be harmful to your liver and impair its function. Never take more medication than your physician recommends. Also consult your doctor about combining medications and herbal supplements.

Keep your weight in check. Obesity is a leading cause of liver conditions, such as fatty liver and hepatitis. Exercise regularly to help maintain an appropriate weight. Eat a healthy diet that is low in fats and high in vegetables and whole grains.
