How to Promote Lymphatic Drainage
Things You'll Need

1
Protect the affected limb. Cuts and other wounds, direct heat and even tight clothes can result in infections.
-
2
Wrap bandages around the entire affected limb, winding it tightly at the fingers or toes, making it increasingly looser towards the top of the leg or arm. Your doctor or therapist can show you the best way to do this, and will often send you home with a set of illustrated instructions.
-
3
Wear a pneumatic compression sleeve on the affected limb. This garment is attached to a pump that uses pressure to force lymph out of the arm or leg and towards the trunk of the body.
-
4
Get a massage designed to stimulate lymphatic drainage. The technique used for this condition is called manual lymph drainage, in which specific hand motions cause lymphatic fluid to leave the limbs and travel to lymph nodes for proper drainage. Receive clearance from your doctor before having this treatment done, as manual lymph drainage can be hazardous for those with a wide variety of health issues.
-
5
Ask your therapist or doctor which gentle exercises you can perform to encourage lymphatic drainage.
-
6
Wear compression stockings or sleeves to prevent future lymph accumulation in the limbs. If necessary, find out from your physician where you can buy these garments or have them made especially for you.
