Brain fog is a condition where a person may feel "out of it." Symptoms include forgetfulness, shorter attention span, depression, and lack of focus. People who suffer from disorders such as fibromyalgia are prone to brain fog as are people with insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic infections, or with too many heavy metals in the body.

Examples of good carbohydrates to eat include apples and brown rice. Omega-3 can be found in fish and flax seed.

    Causes

    • One common cause of brain fog is a vitamin B-12 deficiency. A lack of this vitamin can lead to mood swings and confusion. Since we get most of our vitamin B-12 from meat, people who are vegetarian are prone to these issues. You can buy supplements of vitamin B-12, but make sure you speak to a doctor before taking any type of vitamin or drug.

      Another cause that people tend to overlook is too much heavy metal--such as mercury, lead, or aluminum--in the body. When these metals build up, the body has trouble excreting them. They tend to build up in the brain, causing brain fog. After determining which metals are in your system, your doctor may recommend chelation therapy, where vitamins and drugs are given intravenously until the metal is no longer detectable.

      Another issue you may want to explore is a candida infection, which is an overgrowth of yeast in your system that can cause brain fog. Typically, these can be eradicated by avoiding foods that contain yeast and taking a probiotic supplement.
