What Is Augmentin Duo Used For?

Augmentin Duo, often simply called Augmentin, is an ingestible pill containing doses of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Both ingredients in Augmentin Duo are antibiotics--in other words, the ingredients help kill bacterial infections. A doctor may prescribe this medication for a number of bacterial conditions.
  1. Ear Infections

    • Bacterial infections of the ear are common, especially among children. While amoxicillin alone is often prescribed, many doctors may also recommend dual-acting Augmentin.

    Urinary Tract Infections

    • According to Drugs.com, Augmentin is also useful in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs). Common urinary infections like cystitis, and even more serious pyelonephritis infections, can be treated with Augmentin Duo.

    Bronchitis

    • While most bronchitis is caused by viral infections and requires alternative treatment, rare cases of bacterial bronchitis can be treated with Augmentin Duo.

    Pneumonia

    • Characterized by lung inflammation, pneumonia can lead to serious respiratory problems or even death. Augmentin Duo can be used to treat bacterial pneumonia. Fungal, viral, or parasitic pneumonia, however, requires different treatment.

    Sinusitis

    • Sinusitis is an inflammatory infection similar to pneumonia, but it impacts the paranasal sinuses rather than the lungs. When bacteria is the known cause, Augmentin Duo can be used for treatment.
