Spider Vein Removal
Spider veins are red or purplish splotches that appear on the face or legs when a group of blood vessels dilates close to the skin's surface. Spider veins normally do not cause pain and are primarily a cosmetic concern. Treatment options are available to lessen the appearance of spider veins.-
Treatment
-
Injections of solutions into your spider veins are called sclerotherapy. Your doctor performs the procedure in his office and administers the injection with a small needle and syringe. The solution scars the veins and causes them to collapse, hiding their appearance. Laser treatment uses small bursts of light to damage the veins and cause them to disappear. This technology is newer and less invasive than sclerotherapy. Wear support or compression stockings after the procedures to support the legs and aid in healing. Avoid wearing high heels, as they may contribute to spider veins.
Surgery
-
Surgery for spider veins is called vein stripping. You lie on a table as your doctor cuts small incisions into your skin. The vein is removed through the incisions. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis. Avoid standing for long periods for several days after the procedure to give legs time to heal. Wear a compression bandage applied to the affected area for a few days. Circulation will not be affected with vein removal, because deeper leg veins will absorb large volumes of blood.
Considerations
-
Wear support hose to keep spider veins from recurring. Be aware that treatment may cause blood clots, allergic reactions and permanent scarring. A pigmentation change may occur in the treatment area and take up to a year to fade away. Elevate the legs several times a day to improve circulation. Exercise by walking, because this encourages blood flow through the legs. Maintain a healthy weight, because excess weight puts pressure on veins. Follow a low-sodium diet to prevent water retention in the legs. Avoid sitting or standing for long periods by taking a five-minute break every 30 to 40 minutes. Spider vein treatment is normally not covered by insurance, because it's mainly a cosmetic concern. Discuss with your doctor proper exercise and diet to keep spider veins from recurring.
