Cervical Radiculopathy & Hip Pain

Cervical radiculopathy is a condition in which a nerve in the neck is pinched, inflamed, or otherwise working incorrectly. This condition has a variety of causes and can cause pain elsewhere in the body.
  1. Referred Pain

    • While it may seem odd that a pinched nerve at the base of the neck could cause hip pain, it is possible through a condition called referred pain, where pain from an injury in one part of the body seems to come from another part.

    Causes

    • Cervical radiculopathy can be caused by a variety of diseases and conditions, including Lyme disease, cancer, influenza, or a herniated disc. This condition can also be caused by a blow or injury to the neck.

    MInor Treatment Methods

    • In many cases, a doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, which will hopefully reduce the swelling and cause the condition to go away. Physical therapy and a soft back brace are also often part of cervical radiculopathy treatment.

    Surgery

    • Surgery is offered if there is a risk of serious nerve damage. The most common sign of this damage is the presence of muscle weakness in addition to the pain.

    Prognosis

    • For cervical radiculopathies caused by injury, the prognosis is generally quite good. Unfortunately, for those caused by the degeneration of the spine, treatment is less likely to be effective.
