Also known as adrenal insufficiency and Addison's disease, the condition causes an underproduction of the hormones cortisol and aldosterone, both of which are needed for normal bodily functions. Adrenal dysfunction is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder that shrinks or destroys the adrenal cortex. Other causes can include a fungal infection, tuberculosis and cancer.
Common Symptoms

The most common symptoms of adrenal dysfunction are muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss and fatigue that is chronic and getting worse.
Other Symptoms

Other symptoms of adrenal dysfunction include headache, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, depression, low blood sugar and blood pressure, salt cravings and missing or irregular menstruation.
Hyperpigmentation

Adrenal dysfunction can cause your skin to darken, usually on scars, lips, the folds of skin and pressure points such as knees and knuckles.
Treatment

Treatment of adrenal dysfunction includes replacing missing cortisol with synthetic steroids such as glucocorticoid. Treatment also includes increasing fluids, proteins and complex carbohydrates.
