What Is the Difference Between Having the Flu & Being Pregnant?

Early symptoms of both influenza---more commonly known as the flu---and pregnancy could be confused if a pregnancy is unexpected. They are two very different conditions, however, and the similarities will end quite quickly.

Causes

• The flu is caused by a viral infection that affects your respiratory system. Pregnancy involves the fertilization of a woman's egg by a man's sperm, resulting in the conception of a baby.

Symptoms

• The flu and early pregnancy share a few common symptoms, such as fatigue, headache and backaches. Additional flu symptoms can also include fever, dry cough and a stuffy nose. Early pregnancy symptoms include frequent urination, swollen breasts and absence of menstruation.

Time Frame

• The flu usually only lasts for a few days or a week, with symptoms generally lessening due to rest and increased fluids or medication. Pregnancy lasts for about 40 weeks, and the various symptoms can come and go at any time.

Risk Factors

• Anyone can catch the flu. However, the very young or very old, those with another disorder such as diabetes or those who have a weakened immune system are more at risk for getting sick. Pregnancy generally only affects women who are sexually active, not using contraceptives and producing healthy eggs during ovulation.

Complications

• The most common complication of the flu is pneumonia, which is a very serious bacterial infection affecting the lungs. Pregnancy complications can be numerous, vary in severity, and include ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage and urinary tract infections.

Treatment

• The best treatment for overcoming the flu is to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. Pregnancy usually requires regular doctor visits and a well-balanced diet to ensure the health and well-being of the mother and developing baby.
