How to Stop Exhaustion

Exhaustion, or fatigue, is different from just feeling drowsy or sleepy. It causes you to feel weary, lethargic and tired, often for extended periods of time. Exhaustion can be both a normal and important response to many different factors going on in your life. More importantly, there are ways to stop exhaustion before it seriously impedes your life.

Know the causes. Causes of exhaustion can be psychological or physical. Anemia (iron deficiency) or an undiagnosed underactive thyroid can be physical causes. Sleep disorders, like insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, or depression can be psychological causes.

    • 2

Change your lifestyle. If you don't suffer from any physical or psychological problems, try to avoid any other issues that may cause your fatigue. If you are working long or irregular hours, try to get consistent and regular amounts of sleep every night. Maintain a sensible work schedule. If work has caused mental exhaustion and stress, switch jobs (if possible) or take a vacation. Change your stressful personal situation. You may have to deal directly with problems in any stressful relationships.

Try to relax. You can try meditation or yoga to eliminate exhaustion and clear your mind. Or make sure you exercise regularly. Drink plenty of water and eat a well-balanced and healthy diet. Another way to stop exhaustion is to take a multivitamin daily. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and drugs, and depressants like alcohol and sedatives. They are not effective ways to stop exhaustion and could cause your fatigue to become worse.

Contact your doctor if other symptoms accompany your exhaustion. Call your doctor immediately if you experience little to no urine output, swelling, weight gain, confusion, blurred vision or dizziness. Also, contact your doctor if you wake up and fall back to sleep several times during the night, have headaches or dry skin along with exhaustion. If you are already on antidepressant medication and still exhausted, contact your doctor to have your medication adjusted.

Add supplements to your diet to stop your exhaustion. You can buy supplements in different forms like capsules, powder or tablets. Have your doctor give you an injection of vitamin B-12, for example. Vitamin B-12, also called cobalamin, can stop fatigue and keep red blood cells and nerve cells healthy. Try the guarana supplement to boost your energy. A supplement of valerian can help with insomnia. If you suffer from anemia, iron supplements can stop your exhaustion and boost your red blood cells.
