Information on Erectile Problems

Erectile problems, also called erectile dysfunction or ED, are a common problem in which a man cannot develop or maintain an erection to engage in intercourse. It could be a temporary condition due to stress and other factors, or an ongoing problem requiring treatment.
  1. Healthy Erection

    • A normal, healthy erection is caused by hormones, blood vessels and nerves and muscles working together. Signals from the brain trigger the appropriate muscle and nerve responses when sexual stimulation is perceived.

    Erectile Dysfunction Causes

    • Various different factors can lead to ED, including health problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes, unhealthy habits including obesity and alcohol or drug abuse, or nerve damage incurred by injury or other diseases, according to the National Institute of Health.

    Getting Help

    • Many men are not eager to admit they are experiencing an erection problem, but talking to a doctor is an important step if the problem begins suddenly or does not go away with other "at-home" measures. Sometimes a new medication is responsible and a different prescription may help.

    Diagnosis

    • After a full physical examination, your doctor will ask questions in order to determine the possible cause of your ED. Additional tests such as blood and nerve tests, penile ultrasounds and urine analysis may help to uncover a medical reason behind the problem.

    Treatment

    • A number of treatments are available for ED, and the correct type for you will depend on the cause of the problem. Sometimes simple lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise and a healthy diet can resolve the issue. Medications are available, including Viagra and Cialis, that increase blood flow to the penis.
