Digoxin Information

Digoxin is a heart medication made from the leaves of the digitalis plant and prescribed under the brand names Digitek, Lanoxin and Cardoxin. It is used to regulate and strengthen heart rate and treat congestive heart failure.
  1. Precautions

    • Tell your doctor if you have any heart rhythm disorders, kidney or liver disease or have had an allergic reaction to digoxin.

    Side Effects

    • Call your doctor if you show any signs of an allergic reaction, such as facial swelling, hives or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects can include uneven heart rate, blurred vision or hallucinations. Milder side effects may include nausea, headache or a mild skin rash.

    Drug Interaction

    • Other medications may interact with digoxin, such as antacids, Xanax or supplements that contain calcium.

    Dosing

    • Take digoxin at the same time each day with a full glass of water. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember or wait until your next scheduled dose. If you have taken too much, call your doctor immediately.

    Warning

    • Dehydration can cause an accidental overdose of digoxin. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid becoming overheated while on this medication.
