What Do Calcium Deposits in the Lymph Glands of the Lungs Signify?

Calcium deposits in the lymph glands of the lungs may signify a bacteria infection called Helicobacter pylori. It can also signify a lung disease called Histoplasmosis.

  1. H. Pylori

    • H. Pylori is caused by bacteria that is responsible for ulcers. It can damage and weaken the lining of the stomach. H. pylori can cause calcium deposits to develop in the lymph glands of the lungs.

    Histoplasmosis

    • Histoplasmosis is a type of lung disease that is airborne. When you breathe in the Histoplasma capsulatum fungus you may develop this disease. Construction workers and farmers are those most in contact with this fungus.

    Diagnosis

    • Histoplasmosis is discovered when calcium deposits are found in the lymph glands of the lungs through a chest x-ray.

    • When the fungus enters the lungs and settles in the small air sacs, the fungus is trapped. The immune system then tries to rid the body of the fungus. As the fungus continues to multiply, scarring, inflammation and calcium deposits can occur in the lymph glands of the lungs.
