Natural Ways to Reduce Leg Swelling
Leg swelling is a common issue for pregnant women and neuromuscular patients having taken medication that causes fluid retention and the inability of muscles to absorb liquid. There are several ways to naturally reduce leg swelling without drugs.-
Diet
-
Restrict how much salt you consume in your diet, as salt increases how much fluid the body holds and makes you thirsty for more liquid. Cut down on how much water you drink during the day. Drinking less that two liters a day will keep swelling down. Make sure to stay away from caffeinated drinks such as coffee or tea, as they make you crave water due to dehydration.
Recline and Restrict
-
Change the chair you regularly sit in to improve circulation to your legs. Bad circulation will cause the legs to hold onto water. Lie on your back with your legs elevated and a pillow under the knees to promote healthy blood flow. Do this as often as possible during the day. This will also help you sleep through the night, as retained water in the legs, when lying down, will travel to the bladder causing the need to urinate.
Wear support socks. These are available through your doctor or your local pharmacy. These socks help to promote blood flow in the legs and reduce swelling. These support socks can be worn throughout the day.
Diuretics
-
If the leg swelling is serious, take diuretics to flush water out of your system. Diuretics are pills or liquid that promote regular bowel movements and urination. Diuretics should be taken only under the supervision of a physician, as high quantities can affect general health. Also, taking diuretics such as water pills can make you thirsty, so water intake must be monitored.
