Natural Way to Treat Seizures

Several conditions can result in seizures, but no matter what the cause, they are not a welcome occurrence. Drug are usually used to treat seizures, but there are several other ways to fight them off.
  1. Ketogenic Diet

    • Treat seizures by maintaining a diet high in fat and low in carbohydrates. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that reproduces some of the effects of starvation. This causes the body to break down fats as opposed to carbohydrates during activity. If there are low amounts of carbohydrates in the body, the liver is forced to produce ketone bodies instead of glucose. High amounts of ketone bodies in the blood create ketosis. This has been shown to reduce the occurrence of seizures in children even after the diet has ceased.

It is important that a doctor be consulted before you go on the ketogenic diet. Ketogenic diets can cause malnourishment, dehydration, constipation, reduced growth in children and kidney stones.

    Fish Oil

    • Take fish oil regularly to help prevent seizures. Adding Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to the diet can help central nervous system function better and reduce the occurrence of epileptic seizures. Omega acids can be found in cold-water fish, including salmon, and can also be found in supplement form at your local pharmacy. Consume 5 mg of Omega-3 and 6 at breakfast every day to help reduce seizure activity.

    Stress

    • Lowering stress levels can also help lower seizures. High stress levels can help lower the trigger level for a seizure. Try to keep work-related stress to a minimum. Sleep regular hours and try to get the best sleep possible. Take melatonin to aide sleep cycles. Do regular exercise to help lower anxiety, stress, and raise serotonin levels, the chemical that helps reduce depression. Yoga is a good exercise to increase blood flow, help strengthen the central nervous system and lower stress.
