Multiple Myeloma Symptoms & Treatment

Multiple myeloma is a cancer involving the white blood cells in bone marrow. The cells are called plasma cells. In multiple myeloma, they increase to abnormal levels that affect the red blood cell count, the kidneys, bones and immune system. The cause of multiple myeloma is unknown.

    • Symptoms of multiple myeloma vary but can include bone pain, loss of appetite, mental confusion, infections such as pneumonia, weight loss and leg numbness.

    • Treating a relapse of multiple myeloma or a case in which the disease has resisted treatment involves repeating initial treatments, trying initial treatments in different combinations and taking part in clinical trials of new cancer drugs.

    • Alternative treatment options include massage therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy and relaxation techniques such as meditation. These alternatives may help ease stress and nausea.
