What Is Plantar Faciitis?

The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is a sharp pain in the heel of the foot. This can come on gradually and is usually in only one foot although it can occur in both feet. The pain is generally the worst upon waking up but can also increase after prolonged standing.
Causes

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by repetitive running and walking. It often occurs in athletes. Other causes include obesity, arthritis and improper shoes.
Diagnosis

Plantar fasciitis is most often diagnosed by symptoms and foot exam. X rays may also be used.
Treatment

Plantar fasciitis is generally treated with rest and stretching. Applying ice is also helpful. In severe cases, surgery may be an option.
Prognosis
-
Most patients are relieved of planter fasciitis within a year with treatment.
