What Causes Prostate Pain & Discomfort?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland near the bladder that produces some of the components of seminal fluid. Pain and discomfort in this gland may stem from one of several causes.
  1. The Facts

    • There are three main causes of prostate problems: prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. Prostatitis is typically associated with bacterial infection; BPH (prostate enlargement) is caused by excess production of cells within the prostate.

    Significance

    • Prostatitis and BPH can cause serious infections and discomfort, but are treatable through a number of approaches. Prostate cancer, while much more serious and potentially life-threatening, is typically treatable if caught in its early stages.

    Symptoms

    • Prostatitis symptoms include urination difficulties and pain in the pelvis, lower back and legs. BPH symptoms include urination difficulties, with more severe cases leading to painful infection and potential bladder or kidney damage. Prostate cancer symptoms include painful urination, painful ejaculation and pain in the pelvis, hips or back.

    Diagnosis

    • Due to the overlap in potential symptoms, diagnosis between forms of prostate pain must be made by a doctor.

    Warning

    • All prostate problems are potentially serious. Seek medical care promptly if symptoms should arise.
